Film Editing: How to use a Match Cut Transition
by eguaogie-eghosa Feb 16, 2022 Views (2.1K)

Many of the best filmmakers shoot to edit, which means they methodically organize their shots in advance to ensure that they capture all of the footage required for editing. The match cut is an effective editing technique that necessitates such forethought.

What Is a Match Cut and What Is It Used For?

A match cut is a film editing transition in which visual components at the end of one scene are matched to elements at the start of the next scene, either visually or aurally. The cut from a view of a burning match to a shot of a sunset in the film Lawrence of Arabia is a famous example of a match cut. A match cut can lend thematic subtext and a sense of fluidity to two scenes, even if they are in different locales or historical periods.

What Is a Match Cut and How Should I Use It?

Use a match cut to establish a relationship between sequences that appear to have unrelated subject matter when editing a film. Match cuts between shots that, despite their differences, share some visual, kinetic, or audio similarities.

A match cut can also be used to depict time passing. Assume you wanted to go from one scenario in a house to another in the same house years later. In the first shot, you might cut from a painting on the wall to the faded outline of where the painting used to hang in the second shot. This not only shows the passage of time but also eliminates the necessity for an establishing shot of the home because the current scene is taking place in the same spot.

Three Types of Match Cuts.

The majority of match cuts are divided into three groups:

1. A graphic match cut, also known as a "visual match cut," connects two scenes by using aesthetically comparable components such as shapes, colours, or patterns. After Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) is murdered, Alfred Hitchcock transitions from a close-up view of blood streaming down the circular shower drain to a close-up of Marion's lifeless eyeball in the notorious shower scene from his 1960 movie, Psycho.

2. Action match cuts are a type of graphic match cut in which two successive scenes are matched based on their motion similarities. In Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, a primate throws a bone into the sky, and the shot cuts to a similar-shaped spaceship soaring among the stars. In the time between the two sequences, this action match cut illustrates humanity's progress.

3. Audio Match Cuts: Matching sound effects or dialogue overlap on both sides of a transition in an audio match cut, also known as an audio bridge. The sound of whirring helicopter blades during combat in Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now (1979) continues into the next scene, where Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) rests in bed beneath a spinning ceiling fan, creating a renowned sound effect match cut. Willard's inability to forget about war is symbolized by the sound of spinning helicopter blades matched to the sound of spinning ceiling fan blades. When young Charles Kane (Buddy Swan) receives a sledge for Christmas from his guardian Thatcher in Orson Welles' Citizen Kane (1941), an example of a dialogue match cut happens (George Coulouris). Kane greets Thatcher with "Merry Christmas..." before the film pans to a much elderly Thatcher in the future, who adds "... and a happy new year..." to Kane's welcome. Many years have gone by since this match was cut without a hitch.

What's the Difference Between a Smash, Jump, and Match Cut?

Each of these three editing methods has a distinct function.

Match cuts smooth the transition from one scene to the next by cutting from one shot to another that features similar-looking action or subject matter.

Smash cuts are abrupt cuts between two shots that emphasize a striking tonal difference.

Jump cuts are passages between shots that seem to leap forward in time. Jump cuts can add speed and a sense of urgency to a scene or depict the passage of time in a montage.
